FAREHAM HOUSING PLANS PRESENTATION
‘NOT GOOD FOR WICKHAM’After much pressure from Wickham Parish Council, Fareham Council Leader, Sean Woodward, brought his road show to us, to present plans for the massive development of 7500 homes between Fareham and Wickham. His smooth presentation looked quite reasonable – until the residents of Wickham turned the spotlight on the weaknesses of his argument.
Fareham is determined to build a town the size of Petersfield, starting at the top of Hoads Hill. And there is not a lot that we can do about it.
Cllr. Woodward’s argument is that the new town has to be big enough to sustain an infrastructure of schools, shops and public buildings. But he failed to satisfy the meeting that this area can cope with such a massive demand on resources.
The weakness shows that they will need to do a lot of work and consultation in the next two years, particularly about the infrastructure, of roads, services and environment, none of which has been properly considered yet.
The meeting got the impression that Fareham is not interested in what happens to the North of them.
There will be another public enquiry to check on the infrastructure issues and we must make sure that our area is not left out of consideration.
Mike Carter has done tremendous work in keeping our Parish Council and the public informed on the proceedings. Please support him and his team.
IT IS YOUR COMMUNITY. PLEASE SUPPORT THE TEAM THAT REPRESENTS YOUR VIEWS.
SOLAR POWER COMES TO WICKHAM CENTRE
Thanks to the efforts of Trustee John Warwick, The Centre has been able to install 52 solar panels on the front roof of the building. John was working hard on looking at the benefits of solar power, when the Government announced cut backs in the FIT allowance. The Trustees held an emergency meeting to discuss and debate the idea and unanimously decided that we should beat the deadline and go for green. The panels will produce up to 10.kWp of energy to save a considerable amount on our power bill, as well as getting a return on the investment which will help towards the general running of The Centre.
THE HUB CAFÉ.
The Café is up and running but we are struggling to keep it open during the day. If you have any spare time and are interested in helping out, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
We are getting bookings from small parties of people, to use the Café and it is normally open for drinks and snacks.
There is a relaxing corner with books & magazines and we have started a book loan club. It is child friendly, with a play corner and it overlooks the play equipment outside.
We also have three PC’s with internet access costing only £1.50 per hour. Help is available if you struggle with computers.

SUPPORTING OLDER PEOPLE
A response from the people that answered our Older Persons survey last year, was that not everyone knew what services were available and how to get to them.
We have managed to link in with the County’s support strategy called ‘Ageing well in Hampshire’ and will shortly be appointing two Village Agents. They will be local people who will be trained to provide high quality information and who will be able to put older people in direct contact with agencies and organisations that can offer support and advice. The Age Concern Hampshire, Information and Advice Service, will support the Village Agents and it is hoped that by providing access to the right information at the right time, people will be able to live independently in their homes for as long as they want.
We are very close to appointing the Village Agents, so that they can have the training and support for the job and we expect to announce full details in the December Newsletter.
The Agents will be part of a team, including Councillor Angela Clear and Police Community Support Officer, Barry Towler. Barry has moved from a Suffolk village where they ran a similar scheme. So we are lucky to have a group of people who take a strong personal interest in the welfare of older people.
Wickham Festival
We are very pleased to welcome the Wickham Festival into the Centre at the beginning of August.
As soon as we have more news we will let you know.
Now that we can see the new Surgery and Housing being built next to Wickham Centre, we can plan for a community hub. Our ambition is to make the most of this golden opportunity, to work with the doctors and Wickham Church of England Primary School to bring to the wider community a comprehensiveservice for everyone.During this year, there will be a certain amount of chaos while the development is going ahead and the new road is being built on The Centre’s site. But we want to plan for the future so that we can get going in 2012. If you are interested in making the most for your community, why not join us and share your ideas. We start work directly after our AGM when we are forming into groups to look at the development of Business and Community opportunities whilst a second group looks at our finances and organisational planning. We are always looking for new blood, so if you are interested in the future of your community, please make sure that you jump on board at the beginning of this exciting new era.
